Start with the Strood
A high tide around your arrival or departure can change the shape of the day.
The Strood guide carries the current tide information and live camera link.
Morning: West Mersea waterfront
For a first visit, start around Coast Road rather than trying to “do the beach” immediately. Walk the waterfront, look at the working boats and pontoon, and understand why oysters and sailing dominate so much of the island’s identity.
If you have children, crabbing can fill an hour without turning the morning into a scheduled attraction.
Lunch: choose the style
The waterfront has informal seafood, pub-restaurants and cafés, with very different styles of stop along a short stretch of the island.
Afternoon: beach, museum or a short walk
Good weather suggests West Mersea Beach and the huts. If you want history, Mersea Museum and St Peter & St Paul give more context. If you still have energy, the waterfront walk is deliberately short enough not to consume the day.
Alternative: make East Mersea the whole day
If nature matters more than restaurants, skip West Mersea entirely. Base the day around Cudmore Grove, the coast, a picnic and perhaps the seasonal foot ferry. It is a different island experience and works better when you do not keep driving back west.
