Stay in the designated area

Use only the parts of the pontoon marked for crabbing on the notices displayed locally. Access arrangements can change. If a marked section is closed or busy with harbour work, choose another time rather than moving into a working area.

Keep children close

The pontoon moves with the tide and the water may be deep immediately alongside it. Keep children within arm’s reach, do not sit with legs hanging over the edge, and keep lines away from the main walking route. A suitable lifejacket is sensible for young children near deep water.

Simple kit and gentle handling

A crabbing line, a little bait and a bucket are enough. Avoid sharp hooks. Use seawater in the bucket, shade it from strong sun and return crabs promptly to the water where they were caught; do not keep them crowded together. Never leave loose line or bait behind.

If you are visiting for the first time

The pontoon is beside a working harbour, not a purpose-built play pier. Watch where trolleys, ropes and boats are moving. If you would rather stay on land, the waterfront walk provides a good view of the harbour without going onto the floating pontoon.
