Start at Coast Road
The Hard and the nearby waterfront give a view of working moorings, oyster boats and sailing craft. Keep to public paths and quay areas; ropes, trolleys and slipways are working equipment, not shortcuts to the water.
Old City and church
Turn inland through the older part of West Mersea for a quieter change of scene, passing streets associated with the island’s maritime history. The parish church and the streets around it can be explored separately if you prefer a shorter route.
Continue to Victoria Esplanade
The public beachfront opens out along the south shore, with beach huts, views across the Blackwater and more room to stop. The beach surface is mixed shingle and sand, and some sections are harder going at high water.
Make your own return
Return through the town on public streets or retrace the coastal part of the walk. This is a flexible outing, not a measured or waymarked circuit: avoid using the optional printable notes as turn-by-turn directions.
Timing and access
Allow an hour or two if you intend to stop regularly. Conditions on the beach depend on tide and weather; a town-street return is more reliable than walking the foreshore when the tide is high.
