Ferries and excursions are different

The public ferry is a transport service between East Mersea, Point Clear and Brightlingsea. Private sightseeing trips are separate bookings and may depart from Brightlingsea rather than West Mersea. Check the East Mersea ferry guide before making a journey around a sailing.

What you can see from the water

Approaching West Mersea Harbour by boat brings its moorings, oyster-working landscape and the Packing Shed into view from the channel. Around the Colne, the mudflats and saltmarsh are particularly noticeable at lower water. Wildlife can be seen on some trips, but sightings depend on the season and conditions.

Finding a trip

There is no single year-round timetable for sightseeing boats. Confirm the actual departure quay, length of trip, whether seats or the whole boat are booked, accessibility, and how cancellations are handled. The harbour operator publishes the separate foot-ferry service.

Weather and tides

Estuary trips can be cancelled or rescheduled for wind, visibility or water level. Leave space in your plans for a changed departure, and do not assume a boat can collect you from an unstaffed beach or marsh.
