West Mersea's public spring

St Peter's Well was the principal public well in West Mersea. The spring was noted for its reliable supply of fresh water and was locally reputed never to run dry. It is now a covered historic feature beside Coast Road and St Peter's Well Meadow.

The well appears on Ordnance Survey maps of the late nineteenth century. A photograph made after the 1884 earthquake shows its earlier timber-lined form. The restored well now has a timber cover and a bronze plaque added in 2000 by the Town Council's Millennium Committee.

The medieval setting

The well stands in an area associated with the medieval priory and the parish church of St Peter and St Paul farther inland. The archaeological record identifies a possible connection with the priory, but its original construction date has not been established.

Protection of the meadow

The Town Council owns and manages the shore and water meadow between the Monkey Steps and Hove Creek. In 1965 Dr Alec Grant of the Mersea Island Society registered a stretch of approximately 400 yards as a village green. Mayor Len Broadhurst unveiled a commemorative plaque in 1984.

The meadow is also part of a protected coastal habitat. The council manages its willows, aspens and reed bed; trees bordering Coast Road have Tree Preservation Orders.

How the meadow is managed

St Peter’s Well Meadow is designated as part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Town Council maintains the reed bed and regularly pollards willow and aspen trees. The boardwalk helps keep walkers off sensitive saltmarsh vegetation, while the nearby spring explains why this strip once supported more freshwater-loving plants than neighbouring saltings.

Boardwalk and access

The boardwalk follows public footpath 32 from Coast Road towards Hove Creek Beach. It crosses saltmarsh and may be covered by spring tides, so the presence of a path does not guarantee a dry crossing at high water. The well itself is a historical feature, not a drinking-water facility.
