A regatta with a long memory
West Mersea Town Regatta dates from 1838. The volunteer-run event is independent of Mersea Week, although the two take place close together in summer.
What happens on the water
The programme changes from year to year, but sailing is central. The organiser publishes separate information for cruiser and smack racing, dinghies and Mersea Fishermen’s Open Boats, alongside watersports events.
The programme also includes the Cobmarsh Marathon rowing race around Cobmarsh Island. Working-boat races and dinghy sailing share the day with shoreside activities.
What it feels like from shore
For non-sailors, the waterfront becomes the viewing area. The regatta’s visitor information covers stalls and displays ashore, music and spectator events around Coast Road and the Town Hard area; the exact programme varies each year.
Regatta day on the waterfront
Regatta day brings heavier traffic, busier car parks and a much fuller waterfront than an ordinary weekend. Tide and event information can both affect arrival times.
The organisers publish current race times, programme updates and shoreside arrangements. Mersea Week has its own separate race programme.
