Mersea Island Lions Club was chartered in 1978. Its members raise money for local causes and organise practical services and events with the help of volunteers and supporters.

Community bus and everyday support

The Lions Community Bus, replaced in November 2022 with help from a community grant, provides regular trips to Tollgate on the first Wednesday morning of the month and to Colchester on the third Wednesday morning. The bus also supports the Friday Fish and Chip Club at the Melrose Road community hall. Check arrangements directly before relying on a journey.

The club has a beach hut available for community use in return for a donation towards upkeep. It also collects used spectacles and ink cartridges for reuse or recycling; collection points may change.

Fundraising and Christmas meals

Public fundraising has included the Lions Family Festival, island yard sales, a sponsored beach walk and contributions from the community bus. Each Christmas the club organises meals for people spending the day alone. Its 2026 fundraising report also records support for local charities and replacement pads for an island defibrillator.

Taking part

The club welcomes volunteers as well as members. Activities are advertised through its events diary, while its community work page explains the bus, meals and other projects. Event dates, collections and journey arrangements should be confirmed with the Lions before attending.
