Start with the park paths

Begin at the main car park in Broman’s Lane. Paths through the grassland provide a gentler outing; the sea wall and shoreline offer views over the Colne estuary and Mersea Stone. Return by the route you know if you are unsure of conditions ahead.

Choose the seawall or beach carefully

The surface can become muddy after rain, and exposed beaches change substantially with tide and erosion. Keep away from unstable cliffs and any fenced archaeological or conservation work. Never assume a beach-level link is passable just because it was clear on an earlier visit.

Birdlife on a short walk

In the colder months, look across the mudflats for feeding waders and groups of brent geese. Stay on paths, keep dogs under effective control and allow birds space to feed or rest. Winter birdwatching has more detail.

Before you set out

The county park has an established visitor base, but coastal access can be temporarily altered. Check signs at the park and the Essex public rights of way map for a longer route. For a simple visit, allow time for stopping and watching the water rather than following an assumed fixed-distance circuit.
