Brierley Hall at 72 East Road

The exterior of Brierley Hall dates to around 1800. It is a nearly square house, with roughcast walls above a red-brick base, a hipped slate roof and three red-brick chimney stacks. Historic England's Grade II listing records a west-facing portico with two fluted Doric columns made from coopered timber.

A round-headed sash window is set above the door and pairs of small-paned sash windows flank the entrance. Weatherboarding survives on the rear elevations, and the recorded interior includes neoclassical fireplace surrounds.

The roof is slate-covered and hipped, with a valley running from the front towards the rear. Together with the square ground plan and three chimney stacks, this roof arrangement belongs to the house’s formal exterior rather than the older agricultural buildings nearby.

The garden wall

The garden wall east of the house has its own Grade II designation. Dating from the early nineteenth century, it runs east along East Road and returns south. The street frontage has eight bays divided by brick pilasters, with the brickwork laid in Flemish bond. The house and wall were both listed on 27 January 1982, as separate structures.

The older farm barn

A barn formerly recorded at Brierley Hall Farm was built around 1700. Its historic description identifies three timber-framed bays, heavy studs, curved braces and a projecting gabled porch on the east side. It was a separate agricultural building rather than part of the house's circa-1800 exterior.

The barn was once listed Grade II as National Heritage List entry 1389690. The government planning-data record gives 5 March 2026 as the end date of that designation. The available record does not establish why the designation ended or whether the historic timber-frame barn survives.
