BOADICEA CK213

BOADICEA CK213 is a 30-foot oyster smack built by Williamson in 1808. She worked commercially until 1938, when she was acquired by Michael Frost. The boat has remained in his family, and is among the oldest surviving East Coast sailing fishing craft.

Hull and working life

Her recorded beam is about 10 feet 6 inches, draught 4 feet 6 inches and weight around 12½ tons. Her broad, full-bowed hull helped carry her through a seaway while remaining manoeuvrable in the creeks.

The Frost family and later sailing

Michael Frost acquired BOADICEA in 1938 after her commercial career ended. She remained with the Frost family, later sailing under Reuben Frost. Family sailing has included oyster dredging, trawling and autumn herring fishing under sail, alongside the annual smack races.

She won the David Gowing Memorial Trophy for the most traditionally turned-out smack at the 2004 Colne Match.

At Mersea Week in August 2019, Reuben Frost sailed BOADICEA to third place on the Tuesday and sixth place across the week, finishing second in class behind GRACIE CK46.
